The term “meme” was coined in 1976. Today, these cultural artefacts have gone viral, and are redrawing the boundaries of acceptable political discourse.The classroom setting wasn’t the only thing upended during the shift to remote learning. Humanities courses that had traditionally relied on hands-on instruction, such as art education, also faced myriad challenges during the transition.

The Application Of Modern Computer Aided Technology In Fine Art Education

“Even amid difficult budget decisions, a continued commitment to certified visual arts educators and sequential visual arts and design instruction remains a priority, ” said National Art Education Association President Thom Knab in an open letter to K–12 superintendents, principals and school board members in May.

Teachers have had to reinvent their approach to art education, and technology has played a pivotal role. A national study by Adobe Education found that teachers and students alike value creativity in the modern classroom and hope to see an increased use of technology in their courses. New tech tools and collaborative resources offer an opportunity to build on this trend. Art educators can create fun and engaging lesson plans that foster an appreciation for the humanities from an early age.

According to a study by Adobe Education, 76 percent of Generation Z students and 75 percent of teachers wish there was a greater focus on creativity in their classes. Educational priorities have evolved, and today’s lesson plans focus more on interactive tools and less on memorization.

New Edtech Lab To Provide Hands On Experience With Instructional Technology

When comparing the perceptions of Gen Z students and Gen Z educators, the Adobe study found that both groups consider technology a defining characteristic of their generation and that both believe creativity will play a defining role in their future success. The study also indicates a demand and a need for courses that focus on digital art and creativity in the classroom — and that technology is the most fitting instrument for change.

With the right approach, technology can not only prove compatible with art education, it can enhance it. Teachers can re-create in-person field trip experiences with the virtual resources from Penn State University’s Palmer Museum of Art or travel through notable moments in art history with the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s interactive “time machine.” Still, one of the most important elements of art education is the focus on creativity. It is crucial, experts say, to empower students to express themselves and create their own works of art, whether through digital tools or traditional mediums like paint or charcoal.

“Creativity is really important for students because it gives them an outlet for expressing their ideas and putting a personal touch on their understanding of concepts, ” says educator Jeff Larson in an Adobe video case study. Larson is a former animation instructor at Balboa High School in San Francisco.

Not Just Stem: Digital Teaching Materials For The Arts, Too

Like other schools around the nation, Balboa High School has used digital tools and online resources to optimize student creativity in the classroom. Students there use Adobe Creative Cloud to create multimedia content and explore their imaginations. Roanoke, Va.’s Cave Spring Middle School is another example of successful implementation of digital art resources. In 2018, students there began using Adobe Spark to strengthen critical thinking skills and stimulate creativity in the classroom.

With the shift to hybrid and distance learning models, these digital tools have become increasingly prevalent throughout art education. Most notably, teachers have used videoconferencing software, like Zoom and Google Classroom, to supplement in-person art instruction.

To make of the most of your virtual classroom, it’s critical to make sure you have the right equipment and setup. Many smartphones and tablets offer HD cameras that are suitable in quality for art classrooms. Incorporating tripods can also help ensure better visual quality for instruction.Having worked as an art teacher for 50 years, Lois DeWitt decided to try offering drawing and painting classes online. So in 2008 she established a website — Free Online Art Classes — that now attracts about 15, 000 visitors a month from places like Indonesia, Africa and Germany to courses that include instruction in watercolors, oil painting and “artful lighting.” (Ms. DeWitt also happens to work in the lighting department of a Home Depot store on Sundays.)

The advantages are clear: Online courses can make it possible for aspiring artists to learn without having to travel great distances or pay for costly studio space. The emphasis on visual learning — through video demonstrations — can also bridge language barriers. But still unclear is whether fine art can effectively be taught remotely.

“There’s a difference between being digitally native and learning how to learn online, ” Mr. Towers said. “We all know we have to figure it out.”

Various organizations are dipping their toes into this arena. The Fashion Institute of Technology recently started offering an online course in basic drawing. Parsons offers online credit and noncredit courses in topics like graphic design and color theory. The New York Institute of Photography went completely online last year.

Digital Art Education Tools Encourage Students' Creativity And Curiosity

The Museum of Modern Art is one of a few museums that have gotten into the act, with seven online courses, including a collage class, which combines studio technique demonstrations with study of the works in MoMA’s collection.

“Watch exclusive videos — shot in MoMA’s galleries — about works by some of the masters of collage, including Pablo Picasso, Joseph Cornell, Hannah Höch, Robert Rauschenberg, Mark Bradford and others, ” the museum’s website says. “Detailed demonstrations will show you how to make your own collages, inspired by the ways in which these masters pushed the boundaries of representation and materials.”

The Fashion Institute of Technology course was developed to enable students to learn from distant locations; one student, for example, participated in the course from Milan. Students submit their work to a Dropbox file, and the teacher, John Allen, responds with his critique.

The Bird's Eye map was a popular and charming cartographic form used to depict U. S. and Canadian cities and towns during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Known also as bird's-eye views, panoramic maps, perspective maps, and aero views, panoramic maps are nonphotographic representations of cities portrayed as if viewed from above at an oblique angle. Although not generally drawn to scale, they show street patterns, individual buildings, and major landscape features in perspective. Artists, including the prolific birdseye cartographers Albert Ruger, Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler, Lucien R. Burleigh, Henry Wellge, and Oakley H. Bailey would travel town-to-town and, as overhead views in those days were limited to hot-air balloon flights, give the citizens an otherwise-unobtainable perspective. The majority of these lovely old maps were created for Northeastern U.S. cities and towns, with most other regions being represented- although some sparsely. We've taken great care to lovingly retouch this collection of vintage maps by removing as much of the most distracting defects while still preserving their historic charm.

The word “digital, ” in reference to art, is one that still tends to make many cringe. Though no one really talks about “digital” movies or music at this point, with digital distribution methods dominating their dissemination, art remains an analogue-dominated field. Aside from video (which is only part of the story—more on that below), some other common terms used to describe digital art practices include moving image, multimedia, and new media art. But how do you account for other tech-driven or computer-generated practices that may include 3D-printed sculpture, URLs, or conceptually driven network and programming-based practices? As a broad term, however, “digital” is as useful as it gets—able to describe works that begin and end as computer files, or, alternatively, those that use digital technology as part of their process.

We increasingly encounter videos, animation, 3D-prints, and other digital formats in museums, galleries, and art fairs all over the world. In addition to an ever-growing number of videos and installations at major art-market events, such as Art Basel’s “Statements” section this past summer, we are now seeing more initiatives worldwide that are digitally themed or are heavy on digital works. These include the recent New Museum Triennial in New York, featuring Daniel Steegmann Mangrané’s Oculus Rift installation, “CO-WORKERS – Network as Artist, ” currently on view at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and even specialized video and moving-image art fairs such as LOOP and Moving Image. Galleries dedicated to digital art and its impact include XPO in Paris, and bitforms and Microscope in New York.

This deep and far-reaching creative landscape—where even the most formal of painters may be mining Photoshop as a creative tool—has spawned some daring and specialized collectors who are pushing the envelope. But user-driven distribution and consumption has not affected the art world to the extent that it has the music and film industries, but things are changing—and fast. Instagram and Facebook have radically shifted the media landscape. Rhizome and the Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI) archive, after decades on the cutting edge, continue to be indispensable resources. Browser-based platforms such as NewHive, Sedition, and DAATA Editions are bringing affordable art to the web. Recently, Apple opened up its Apple TV platform to several art apps of note—among them and DAD (whose co-founders are two of the authors of this article).

The earliest known surviving photograph was taken by Nicéphore Niépce in 1826 or 1827, and is the product of one of the greatest technological inventions of the modern era—the camera. Leading to mechanical representation and reproduction, this machine vastly expanded the presence of images in our lives today. That led to moving images, which proved to be fertile ground for artists—from Luis Buñuel to Andy Warhol, Matthew Barney, and eventually to Ryan Trecartin’s first forays on YouTube.

Although an analog video recording system, Sony’s battery-powered and portable Portapak from 1967 was a revolution. Artists such as Nam June Paik, Bruce Nauman, Dan Graham, and William Wegman made some of the earliest known video works, seizing on the democratic power (manifest in the ability to broadcast to the masses, as Paik did) and intimacy afforded by the medium to document moving bodies as performances.

What Is A Requisition, And How Does It Work?

Moving images also enabled other non-narrative but time-based artworks (think Andy Warhol’s Empire (1964) or Sleep (1963)), some of which have the tableau-like quality of representational paintings. Today, Michael Manning, Tabor Robak, and the Quistrebert brothers, as well as a number of artists making animated GIFs, are but a few examples of artists “painting” with pixels. Others, like Wade Guyton and Petra Cortright, are on the flip side of that, using digital processes to make paintings on canvas or panels.

What about computers? In 1968 the ICA in London staged “Cybernetic Serendipity, ” one of the first major exhibitions articulating the notion of “computer art.” The show included such figures as Frieder Nake, Georg Nees, and John Whitney, considered engineers or mathematicians more than artists. The show kicked off a rapid proliferation of Net art throughout the ‘90s, which allowed digital tools, in the context of art, to progress. That eventually gave rise to more recent developments, such as Cory Arcangel famously altering a Nintendo game cartridge to make his seminal Super Mario Clouds (2002).

The advent of web browsers gave rise to a whole new school of art that presumes internet-based existence is a given—a movement we are now calling “post-internet, ” a term coined by Marisa Olson in a 2006 panel organized by Rhizome. Data mining from network servers has given rise to numerous practices. Ian Cheng, Jeff Guess, and Gregory Chatonsky create live-action or moving image works that are generated in real time from cloud-based or local data. Artists such as Petra Cortright and Molly Soda found their voices on YouTube, and Amalia Ulman hoodwinked everyone with her Excellences & Perfections (2014) performance on Instagram. Nicolas Sassoon, Sara Ludy, and a group of artists associated with NewHive produce animated gifs, and you can even buy a domain name by Angelo Plessas, Claude Closky, or Rafaël Rozendaal. Last but not least, 3D scanning and printing have also found their place in the realm of sculpture, as seen in the radical installations and sculptures of Josh Kline and Jon Rafman. Video, although in many ways still at the digital sphere’s center, is no longer its sole protagonist.

As our lives have become increasingly web-based, inundated with a profusion of images and movies as data, art practices have also evolved at a mind-melting pace—and our very definition of what it means to be an artist has expanded. The New York collective DIS began as an online fashion magazine but now collaborates with a flock of other artists on projects across all media, manages an image bank, and is curating the 2016 edition of the Berlin Biennial. It’s Our Playground, the moniker of Paris-based duo Camille le Houezec and Joey Villemont, treats curation itself as their primary form of artistic expression. While their art sometimes consists of pieces by other artists placed—or recreated—in the real world, they have also used green-screen technology as a means of documentation, the results of which become works in their own right. Using the digital as a tool in all its forms and applications, these artists are conflating experience, image, documentation, and its distribution to challenge notions of curatorial practice, individuality, collectivity, and the very notion of networking itself. The most exciting part? We’re just getting started.

The 2019 KS2 SATs started in primary schools in England on Monday 13th May 2019. The tests took place over four days.

The 2019 KS2 Maths tests included Paper 1 (Arithmetic), Paper 2 (Reasoning) and Paper 3 (Reasoning). All three test papers were non-calculator tests and their marks were added together for a total Maths mark.

Ks1 Maths Sats Survival: Year 2 Revision Activity Mats

The 2019 KS2 GaPS tests (also known as GaPS or Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling) included Paper 1 (Questions) and Paper 2 (Spelling). Marks for both papers were added together to form the total GaPS mark.

The 2019 KS2 SATs were authored, produced and managed by the STA (Standards and Testing Agency) under the authorisation of the DfE (Department for Education).

KS2 SATs were taken in Maths, Reading and GaPS under formal exam conditions. These papers were marked externally whilst separate teacher assessments in Writing and Science were marked by their teachers.

Pupils with additional educational needs were offered support and/or extra exam time where available. Modified materials using braille and large print were available to eligible pupils and their teachers.

For the 2019 Key Stage 2 tests, it was decided that the Reading paper would again take place on the Tuesday following a successful trial in 2018.

To help prepare children for the 2019 KS2 SATs, children were able to download test papers from previous years free of charge. Whilst not working to the same curriculum, KS2 SATs Papers from 2015 (and before) were still useful to aid preparation.

The raw score required to achieve the "expected standard" (a scaled score of 100) was 28. Thus, the "pass mark" for pupils taking the 2019 KS2 English Reading SATs was 28/50 or 56%. In order to achieve "greater depth" (scaled score of 110) a child would have to score at least 41/50 or 82%.

In order to achieve "greater depth" (scaled score of 110) a child would have to score at least 55/70 or 78.6%.

Each school's KS2 SATs results were made available to their headteachers in July 2019 via the NCA tools website. Individual KS2 SATs results were fed back to parents some time after this date, normally within a child's end of year report.
